The Antichrist is one of the most-discussed Biblical figures today. The biggest reason people are curious is because the Bible does not reveal who this person is. The Antichrist’s pivotal role in the end times and his good-turned-evil demeanor that leads many astray also inspire a lot of interest.
It should be made clear that we are not talking about Donald Trump or Barack Obama. We are talking about a person who leads at a time when there will be desperation, crime, and devastation much worse than we see now. There will be a rapid increase in technology and immorality. There will be people killing people because they can or because they want to use them for human sacrifices. Christian persecution will be commonplace and near-unbearable.
The Bible talks about several antichrist figures who have come and gone. And there are several who have come and gone in the millennia since the Bible was written. However, there is only one Antichrist who will be worse than the others before him and who will attempt to lead the whole world astray at the end.
Here are seven quick-hit facts about the Antichrist:
Daniel writes in his prophecy that the Antichrist will not show regard for the god desired by women. That is, himself as a man. A common interpretation of this is that he will prefer to be sexually intimate with men, rather than women.
“He will show no regard for the gods of his ancestors or for the one desired by women, nor will he regard any god, but will exalt himself above them all.”
Daniel 11:37 (NIV)
You can find the definition of “Antichrist” here.
He will reign on the earth for seven years. The first 3 1/2 years will be as a peaceful leader of a nation or group. The second 3 1/2 years will be as a cruel and destructive king bent on world domination. He, along with ten kings under him, will rule the entire world for a short time before God intercedes to end his rule.
“The ten horns you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but who for one hour will receive authority as kings along with the beast.”
Revelation 17:12 (NIV)
Perceived as a great leader, he will be able to easily convince people that his interests are pure, and many will let their guard down. This includes the Jewish population of Israel.
“He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’…”
Daniel 9:27 (NIV)
The Antichrist will use the power he gains over Israel to exact control over the Jewish religious system. He will also defile the temple and persecute Jews who resist.
“…In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.”
Daniel 9:27 (NIV)
“As I watched, this horn was waging war against the holy people and defeating them, until the Ancient of Days came and pronounced judgment in favor of the holy people of the Most High, and the time came when they possessed the kingdom.”
Daniel 7:21-22 (NIV)
He will speak unheard-of things and yet be believed and worshiped by many. This will cement his power throughout his reign.
“It opened its mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven.”
Revelation 13:6 (NIV)
He will use this to convince the population of the world that he is a god. This will be what allows him to blaspheme God without reproach from many. And it is how his sway over the world is first crafted.
“The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie, and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.”
2 Thessalonians 2:9-10
Times are getting worse and God has promised us trouble on earth. However, those who believe in Jesus will be saved. Trust in Him and you will be granted a new life on a new earth. A new world that is made perfect and holy by God for His people.
“No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.”
Revelation 22:3-5 (NIV)
